Cinderella – Nosy Crow animated picture book is one of many iPad versions of the classic story of Cinderella. In fact, a search for Cinderella in the iPad App Store yields 178 results. Nosy Crow’s version has won much critical acclaim and numerous awards – here’s its App Store page intro:

My 8 year old daughter had a couple days off school recently and we spent a lot of time with iPad apps. This one sounded very promising, so we took a look at it the other day.

The Daily: Forgetting I’m a Subscriber on a Daily Basis

Oh the laughs and fun The Daily provides. Not so much in their Arts & Life or Gossip pages – but more in the ‘Continually Flubbing the Basics’ sort of way. You know, like not downloading new content automatically like Newsstand apps are supposed to. Or, for its latest trick, routinely ‘forgetting’ that I’m a subscriber.

This morning, as it does many mornings, the app greeted me with the lovely page shown above – telling me how swell it would be to become a subscriber and prompting me to do so now as my free period has expired. Great idea – except that I am already a subscriber, and have been for many months now.

Things Cloud Beta Goes Public

As of today the Things Cloud beta is public, no invite required. This is the beta that is testing out cloud sync (or over-the-air sync) for the excellent Things task management app for iOS and Mac.

This is the one essential feature that’s been missing from Things for (in my view) far too long; so long that it caused me to switch over to OmniFocus. As a big fan of Things, I’m very happy to see that there is finally some real progress being made in their efforts to implement cloud sync. The developers had been allowing more and more users into the beta process over recent months, and they’ve been getting very positive feedback on the latest stages of the beta.

We’ve had incredible feedback from our users, telling us that Things Cloud is proving to be both fast and stable. Some of our users have adopted the beta entirely and created exceptionally large databases.

Review – Endure 3D

iPad Books for Kids: Ann Can’t Sleep

Ann Can’t Sleep is an animated iPad eBook app for children. Its story is all about companionship, friends, and a little girl who just can’t sleep – and her efforts to find the right toy to help her get off to sleep.

The app is published by Light Sleepers, who describe themselves as ‘a small independent crew of multimedia artists,passionate about creating high-quality entertainment for children
that is beautiful, innocent and sweet’. I did a review of the superb Koto Go Silence title from Light Sleepers a couple months ago. It’s a fantastic animated iPad book and my daughter and I both love it. So we had high hopes for Ann Can’t Sleep.

I have reviewed several covers, and cases for the iPad 2, and am not 100% sold on either or, I’m leaning to the Zaggmate case for iPad 2 or the Carbon Cover by iON. But still not sure, so in the mean time I made an iPad cover until my indecision goes away. I Thought I would share it with you to see if anyone else has any awesome creativity. iPad 3 Retina Display Confirmed (2048 x 1536)

New research from MacRumors confirms the next generation iPad will indeed carry a higher resolution display. Researchers at the site acquired a mass produced OEM replacement screen for the iPad 3 and examined the part under a microscope.

What the microscope revealed was a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, precisely four times the number of pixels on the current 1024 x 768 iPad 2 display. Individual pixel size can be seen in the images above from MacRumors, with 16 iPad 3 pixels taking up the same space as 4 iPad 2 pixels.

Study Shows iPads in Kindergarten Class Improve Literacy

Initial results from a research study in Auburn, Maine show that kindergarten literacy scores increased in classrooms where iPads were used. Auburn is the first public school system in the US to provide iPads to each of their youngest students; and they are monitoring the iPad program carefully. The research findings are part of a randomized control trial, as explained by a report from the Auburn School Department:

During the Fall of 2011, the district provided iPads to half of Auburn’s sixteen kindergarten classrooms. The remaining eight classes used traditional resources. The eight iPad classes were selected at random to provide a better examination of the short term literacy impacts. Auburn kindergartners from both settings completed a series of standardized literacy assessments in early September (pre-iPad) and in late November (post-iPad), which provide an objective measure on each groups’ emerging literacy skills.

The study results were presented last week, and they are very positive:

The School Committee was pleased to learn that the study results were quite positive. In fact, students in the iPad classes outperformed non- iPad students, on average, across every literacy measure they were tested on.
